The personalized diet

I am Dr. Maria Luisa Scarabelli, a nutritionist biologist with a studio in Italy – Milan, here is how I develop personalized diets.

The studies done, the specializations achieved, the experience accumulated as a freelancer allow me to say that personalized diets are based on a complete evaluation of the patient which includes the analysis of eating habits, lifestyle and physiological or pathological conditions.

I start with the first visit which lasts about an hour and allows me to collect all the information necessary for the study and drafting of the personalized diet that will be delivered at a later time.

I use tools such as the impedance scale to analyze body composition and create tailored paths to help my patients achieve their goals.

Personal and family history, the vision of laboratory tests carried out recently and the other data obtained during the first visit, such as the results of the impedance weighing and the measurement of the abdominal circumference, are essential to develop a personalized diet.

I don’t just consider weight and BMI, but I take into account the balance between fat mass, lean mass and water.

Lean mass, which represents the set of muscles, is the main responsible for basal metabolic rate, and it is important to maintain it as much as possible while reducing fat mass.

Water, which makes up between 50% and 75% of the human body (depending on gender and age), is also essential for health and must be present in adequate quantities.

To better personalize the diet, collect detailed information through a medical history, assessing the state of health, psycho-physical well-being and the presence of any family pathologies. I also review the most recent laboratory tests to identify any altered parameters influenced by food.

Finally, I find out about the usual diet, lifestyle, food preferences and practical needs of each patient.

Only after completing this in-depth assessment, I can develop a truly specific and personal diet, presenting it during a 1-hour expository interview.

Of course, I remain available in the following days to rectify any foods included in the diet that should be replaced with others more tolerated or more desired in line with the principles of the diet elaborated.
